The station has a restaurant and gift shop as well as a hotel and RV Park for overnight stays. Before your morning departure, there's a shoot-out at the station. Then you climb aboard the historic Grand Canyon Railway and travel the century-old rail line 65 miles (about 2 1/2 hours) and arrive just steps from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, at the 1910 Grand Canyon Depot at the Historic Village. Along the way, you'll be entertained by cowboy characters, enjoy the tunes of strolling musicians, all while you experience train travel from the early 1900s on your journey to the Grand Canyon. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Grand Canyon Railway made its first trip to the Grand Canyon on September 17, 1901. Now you can arrive at the canyon as part of your Grand Canyon Tour from Sedona the original way - by rail.
The Verde Canyon Railroad, or Wilderness Train is located in Clarkdale, Arizona, about a 40-minute (Southwest) drive from Uptown Sedona. The station has a snack bar as well as a gift shop. Passengers enjoy this four-hour scenic train ride in first-class style aboard renovated passenger coaches and open-air viewing cars pulled by vintage locomotives. This picturesque setting is further enhanced by the variety of indigenous flora and fauna and the many migrating waterfowl. Over thirty bald and golden eagles winter in this riparian respite each year.
For the Grand Canyon Railway, select from one of four classes of train service:
Coach Class: Streamliner-era coaches with comfortable bench-style seating in these classic air-conditioned 1950s era passenger cars. Strolling musicians roam the cars while your passenger service attendant answers questions.
First Class: Oversized, reclining seats with plenty of leg room in these air-conditioned streamliner cars. Fresh fruit, pastries, coffee and juice are provided during the morning. Snacks, soft drinks and fine spirits are available on the return trip.
Observation Dome: Padded, high-back chairs sit high above the train in this glass-enclosed streamliner that offers panoramic views of the surrounding scenery. Fresh fruit, pastries, coffee and juice are provided during the morning, while snacks are available on the way back with a champagne toast.
Parlor Class: The Most Exclusive Seat on the Train - lounge-style comforts including a private bar and access to the open-air rear platform. Exclusive service provides fresh fruit, pastries, coffee and juice during the morning, while snacks are available on the return trip along with a champagne toast.
The Verde Canyon Railroad offers three distinct classes of service:
Coach Class: Family-fun seating is offered in vintage coach cars, with Pullman-style seats on each side of a center aisle that flip forward and back just like in the early days of rail travel. Convenient snack bars offer limited alcoholic service such as beer and wine, and non-alcoholic beverages along with munchies. Cars access open-air viewing cars for great photographic opportunities.
First Class: Affordable extravagance is experienced in a first-class car, seating 24 to 40 pampered passengers, depending on each car's unique configuration and decor. Seating includes comfortable love seats or upholstered high-back chairs, along with access to open-air viewing cars. Passage includes a glass of Champagne or sparkling cider upon boarding, and a variety of appetizers. All cars include a full-service bar with premium liquors, and complete beverage service to all seats.
Caboose (private - up to 6 passengers): Step back into luxury, when running a railroad meant riding in your own private car. Designed to accommodate a private party of six or fewer adults, the caboose features such upgraded amenities as crystal glasses of Champagne, plentiful appetizers and premium beverages, all served by a personal attendant. Two private viewing platforms beckon passengers from the overstuffed leather chairs to the fresh outdoors, and cupola seats provide birds-eye canyon viewing. |
