For first time visitors to Sedona, Arizona, we think
it's a great idea to go on an on-road introductory sightseeing
tour of the city of Sedona, Arizona. Not only will you have the opportunity to learn a
little about the unique history, geology and forklore about beautiful Red Rock Country,
but you'll hear about the best places to shop and dine, as well as receive
recommendations on some of the other multitude of activities available in the Sedona
area. And you'll get all of this while getting a layout of the land of the different
parts of Sedona and taking in the spectacular sites and views of Sedona's red rock
countryside.
Since most of the local tour companies in Sedona offer some type of "local"
tour of Sedona, we've limited the companies here to the ones that specialize in ground
tours (that mean ground vehicle or walking tour). Stilll, you can take your local
sightseeing tour of Sedona in your choice of mode of ground transportation. This is
perfect if you don't want to the rougher routes of Sedona's offroad trails, but would
still like to see Sedona on the road on a Jeep
or Hummer Tour. More popular
though, are the city and scenic tours offered in an open-air trolley or climate-controlled,
luxury mini-coach (like a motorcoach, just much smaller group sizes).
On your on-road sightseeing tour of spectacular Sedona, Arizona, you'll have the
opportunity to also choose some of the sights you'll see, based on the tour you select.
Make sure you at least visit Uptown Sedona where most of the prime souvenir shops are
located, the infamous Chapel of the Holy Cross (Sedona's most visited site,, and drive
through the Arts and Crafts "village" of Tlaqupaque in the Gallery District. It's also
great if you get some time up at the top of Airport Mesa, for some stunning views of the
Thunder Mountain Range, including Chimney Rock, Coffee Pot Rock, Ship Rock and Steamboat.
So impressed are we with this view, that we use it on our home page for our signature
vista. Other considerations are a stop at Red Rock Crossing (Cathedral Rock from this
location is the most popular photgraphed spot in Arizona next to the Grand Canyon...you
may want to plan on doing this yourself and spending some time experiencing a vortex
from here).
Get the scope on J.J. Thompson, the Schneblys, Jesse "Bear" Howard and the
other early pioneers of Sedona. Find out what makes Sedona's rock so red, the elevation
of Sedona and why buying beachfront property in Sedona, Arizona is actually possible
(well, about 50 million years ago). Find out about the Indians that were in Sedona
centuries ago, the unique plant and animal life that thrives here, and the dangers our
current conditions and the bark beetle face Sedona. You'll even hear a little about
Sedona, Arizona's mystical vortex sites. A term coined by Page Bryant in 1980 for
special sites she identified as possessing spiritual energy, thousands make a pilgrimage
to Sedona every year to experience the spirituality and mysticism of these spots. Is it
solely spiritual, or is there science behind these sites as well? Ask your local Sedona
Tour Guide. O.k., we'll tell you this...the four sites Page Bryant identified were Bell
Rock, Cathedral Rock, Airport Mesa and Boynton Canyon. But you need to go on a tour to
find out which are electric or magnetic, male or female, aggressive or passive...get the
picture?
